Duplo' s latest modular, high speed, production level sheet feeder, the DSF-5000, offers a number of enhanced benefits and greater productivity for near-line finishing and bookletmaking solutions, meeting the abilities of the industry to produce longer, faster print runs from the latest digital presses.

Responding to the needs of users of both digital colour and high volume black and white cut sheet printers, the DSF-5000 can support the printed output of multiple printers without compromising print production and offers high speed, reliable feeding of a variety of media with both ultrasonic and optical double sheet detection. Of increasing importance to users is the need to use integrated features such as Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) or the optional camera system to read barcodes printed on each sheet, offering the necessary security to ensure reduced waste and customer satisfaction by delivering accurate production on time.

The need for increased speed and versatility in handling digital print even when it is variable content and personalised on mixed weight media is achieved through a new belt suction feeder, the first from Duplo since the hugely successful DC-10/60 vertical collator was introduced almost 10 years ago. The marriage of features that include feeding from the top of a stack of sheets, multi-point sheet separation and active anti-static devices enable consistent and reliable feeding at speeds typically
equivalent to 800 A4 pages per minute from a 610mm high capacity pallet style paper tray.

"The DSF-5000 sheet feeder is the engine of the Digital System 5000 Pro bookletmaking line which is very versatile thanks to its modularity, allowing a customer to configure and expand upon it as their needs and demands change. The feeder has been developed in response to digital press development enabling even longer and higher quality production runs, and although the focus in recent years has been around supporting the growth in digital colour, in 2008 the only sector of printer sales to see growth was in the relatively new area of ultra high speed mono cut sheet printers in the 200-300ppm range. Together with options such as additional feed trays for merging laminated or UV coated covers and inserts that are becoming increasingly popular, the DSF-5000 is ideally suited to meet a wide range of customer's demands." Comments Peter Dyson, Digital Finishing Product Manager at Duplo.

"Customer feedback and the desire to make a system that would integrate seamlessly into their workflow, led Duplo to develop the pallet concept for the DSF-5000 as a universal device that can be loaded easily with work brought from any printer, or inserted directly into a digital press so that it can then be taken on a pallet truck with the stack of printed sheets and loaded directly into the Duplo feeder" continues Dyson. This is available now for users of HP Indigo presses such as the 5500 and 7000 models with further work in progress with other press manufacturers. This feature complements the versatile SCC (slit, cut, crease) module which can be added to the configuration and removes two separate post-press operations of guillotining (to trim full bleed print) and creasing (to avoid the problem of digital print cracking after folding).

Operators benefit from a user-friendly PC graphical interface that provides easy programming, job save, recall and automated set up of the complete finishing line. This single point of control enables one operator to manage the complete line, or more commonly, run the Duplo while they are also running a digital press.

The DSF-5000 will have its debut at Duplo's London Calling event (www.duplolondoncalling.com) taking place at the Hilton Docklands Hotel 22nd and 23rd September
