Route One Print’s Spotlight on Short Runs Prompt Triple Renz Investment

Route One Print’s ongoing investment in fast turnaround short run production solutions continues with the addition of wire binding technologies for calendars and books.

As part of an overall investment programme of more than £4m, the Rotherham trade printer installed a Renz Punch 500 ES and a Renz MOBI 500 ring wire binding solution last autumn to introduce a calendar production service during the busy season. This proved so successful a Renz AP360 high speed automatic punching system was added in February to meet demand and increase capacity for wire bound books.

Route One Print uses litho, digital and inkjet print technologies from Heidelberg B1 & B2 presses, Xerox iGens, HP Indigo and large format HP Scitex’s, plus Fuji & Screen Inkjet solutions.
Jim Swain, Operations Director, explains: “We chose this equipment because we wanted to add calendar production to our portfolio of solutions. We timed it so we could support customers during the seasonally busy period. This was very successful, and the return on investment was very short.

“In the new year, we looked at expanding capacity further and also finding a solution for finishing thicker booklets. We chose the Renz AP360 high speed automatic punch and that has further increased efficiencies. We expect there will be increased interest around our booklet ranges now we have added this equipment, especially personalised notebooks.
“The new equipment fits nicely into our portfolio. We complete a lot of stitched and Perfect Bound books both as short run digital work and medium/long run litho. The additional equipment and products complement our existing service and allow us to offer a new string to our bow. This will enable us to have fresh conversations with our existing customers and target new business. We are also in a very good position for the next calendar season.”

Swain adds: “We have worked with Renz in the past and their systems have a good reputation in the industry.”
The versatile Renz P500 ES can handle all types of books and calendar punching production with ring wire, plastic comb and coil options. It enables fast die changes and incorporates two part split dies so that one die can be used for both book and calendar work. It has a QSA (Quick Size Adjustment) for high flexibility of different paper formats, horizontal paper feeding and can handle a wide range of mixed stocks.

The user-friendly Renz MOBI 500 is a flexible, semi-automatic ring wire binding solution for books, calendars and skip binding. It can handle different paper formats and oversized products up to 260 sheets thick. A touch screen aids a short set up process.

The AP360 features a two-finger paper pick-up system, which can handle a range of mixed stock, fast die-changes and has optional two part split dies for book and calendar work. It has the additional option of a touch screen with job memory which aids set-up, together with a paternoster feeding system for continuous production.
