CPI installs Océ ColorStream 6700

Multi-national printing group CPI has installed a new Océ ColorStream 6700 Chroma roll to roll system after approaching Canon with a mission to streamline production and deliver increased capacity.

A long term user of Océ VarioPrint technology and multiple PRISMA workflows, CPI opted to reinvest with Canon to meet the increasing appetite for print on demand (POD) and fuel operational expansion. Following in-depth consultations on methods of driving greater high quality output, the printer was installed.

CPI Antony Rowe Divisional General Manager, Martin Collyer, said: “Canon has impressed us with its reliable and efficient technologies, and outstanding service. Since implementing Océ VarioPrint 6000 systems, we have increased our ability to produce high volumes of books in short timescales and remain agile in a constantly evolving market. Canon was the obvious choice when it came to exploring new ways of shortening the inventory cycle and bolstering capacity.

“The Océ ColorStream 6700 Chroma has enabled us to adapt to the growing industry wide shift towards print-on-demand - transferring 1.5 million more books to the inkjet platform - without incurring high costs for additional print units and managing complex operations. Integrating perfectly with the existing cut sheet systems, it has also allowed us to maintain flexibility for our customers by providing monochrome printing work while boosting colour production capacity.”

Committed to environmental protection, CPI uses FSC certified papers across all 17 of its factories. It is also dedicated to promoting waste recycling and invests in multiple reforestation programmes around the world. The first European printer to invest in inkjet printing, the group boasts an impressive heritage that includes many well-known printers from CPI books to CPI Clausen & Bosse.

Key benefits from the investment for CPI include:

The ability to transfer existing monochrome work seamlessly to colour production

Outstanding colour fidelity, wider gamut, and higher optical densities

Unrivalled operational efficiency and easy to operate

Outstanding sustainability, with little paper waste and low energy consumption

CPI operates across seven different countries and currently employs a workforce of 2500 staff. As well as producing books and printed documents for leading publishing houses, it also serves the commercial print market, supporting agencies, brands, and retail.

Stuart Rising, Canon UK’s Head of Commercial Print and Production said: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with such a well respected and established industry player. CPI is a major force in print and its dedication to minimal paper wastage, and maximum efficiency ties in perfectly with our own core values. Through the ColorStream 6700, CPI is already achieving the increase in print-on-demand production needed to keep pace with fast changing market dynamics. The speed, quality, and range of the machine, make it the ideal solution for deploying sleek automation in the pre-press environment while restricting energy consumption, and maximising sustainability.”
